Monday 12 February: HOBART to TRIABUNNA

It is a Bank Holiday in Tasmania for the annual Hobart Regatta so many of the local breakfast haunts seem to be closed. We find a small place for coffee and raisin toast before an uber taxi ride to the Maui campervan rental hub near the airport. We are pleasantly surprised that our van is not as big as the one we had in Canada and we are soon packed up and ready to hit the road. Simon navigates us to a local Woolworths supermarket where we stock up with essentials for the next few days. Then to Coal Valley Vineyard thanks to a recommendation from friends of Jane GC. A wonderful spot for a wine tasting with lunch outside with scenic views of the vineyards and Coal River valley beyond. We stop at Richmond which boasts the oldest bridge in Australia and some authentic old houses.
We then drive through Eucalyptus forests and mountainous passes to the eastern coast at TRIABUNNA which we gather is the Aboriginal name for a type of fast legged "turbo chicken".
Our campsite is not picturesque but convenient for our planned trip to Maria Island National Park tomorrow. It is beginning to cloud over and become grey and raining so when we face time Izzie it does not feel that we are so far away from home. We have local Riesling and Pinot Noir with Greek salad and steak cooked on the communal barbecue and are feeling cosy in our new home.
